Set them free! – I (101.15)

101.15 SYNOPSIS:  During a run, Michaela sees two barking dogs locked behind a gate, and hears a voice in her head to set them free. Later, hearing the voice again and unable to sleep, she goes back to facility. There she meets up with Ben who tells her that he has been hearing the same voice.  Together they free the dogs.

Michaela jogs along the Hudson river. (In the distance is the World Trade Center Tower). She then jogs through an industrial neighborhood (a mix of warehouses, businesses, and residences).  Two dogs bark ferociously at her from behind an 8 foot tall chain link fence with a locked gate.

Michaela can’t sleep, so she rides her bike in middle of the night back to the fence where the dogs are.

Facing Ben

A car drives up.

MICHAELA: How’d you find me? Ben? What are you doing here?

/BARKING RESUMES/

BEN: Setting them free. I’ve been hearing it ever since I drove by here this afternoon.

MICHAELA: You said I was losing my mind, Ben! Why’d you lie to me?

BEN: Because maybe I don’t want to be a circus freak! I don’t have the time for it. I got to help Cal, find a goddamn job, get to know my daughter, reclaim my life!

MICHAELA: Do you think I am any happier about this? Who would want to reclaim my life, Ben? Part of me wishes we hadn’t come back at all, but here we are.

BEN: To be clear, this is a felony.

MICHAELA: Yeah, I’m a police officer. I’m pretty sure I know what a felony is.

/DOGS BARKING/

MICHAELA: Hey, what if they attack us?

BEN: They’d be doing their job.

/BARKING CONTINUES/

Michaela opens the gate and the dogs walk out.

/BARKING STOPS/

MICHAELA: That was bizarre.

BEN: You think?

MICHAELA: Now what?

BEN: I don’t know. But hearing a voice in your head one time is a fluke. Twice? Now happening to the both of us? Not a fluke.

Commentary

Having the voices compel Michaela and Ben to set a pair of dogs free was an interesting misdirect, especially since it led to doubts about Michaela’s readiness to rejoin the police force as well as even more tension between her and Jared
