Olive’s surprise

Scene shifts to outside a multistory building. Danny has just closed the tailgate of his pick up truck in which there is a mountain bike in the bed. Olive walks up.

OLIVE Surprise.

DANNY: Now, there’s a face I’ve missed.

OLIVE: Same.

DANNY: How about I cancel my bike ride and we can hit the climbing gym? One step closer to Acadia.

OLIVE: Or you could come see us.

DANNY: Olive, I-I’d love that, but it’s really up to your mom.

OLIVE: [SIGHS] She’s not gonna ask. I can tell she misses you, but it’s like she’s punishing herself.

DANNY: Give her time to process.

OLIVE: Well, it’s like they died all over again. She’s barely smiling. She’s not eating. Seeing her like that messed me up more than the plane, and I can’t do it again.

DANNY: And I don’t want you to.

OLIVE: Then if you still love us…

Olive takes a step closer to Danny.

OLIVE: …help me help her. Please.

Olive is very believable

While teenager Olive is very good at reading her mother and recognizing that she’s spiraling into depression again, she’s not mature enough to anticipate just how badly pulling Danny back into the mix could (and did) backfire. That’s very believable.

  1. Olive said this to Danny about Grace, “She’s not gonna ask. I can tell she misses you, but it’s like she’s punishing herself.” And she then followed up with, “… if you still love us…”

Yes, Olive is immature. But why didn’t she go to her father Ben to help with her mother’s depression? Based on the time-line, Cal had already told her about the callings. She would later say to Ben, “Dad, you could’ve told me. You could’ve trusted me”.

Really, trust Olive? She had already gone behind Ben’s back twice seeking Danny’s help. The shoplifting incident at the Bluemercury and with her personal dinner invitation.

When it comes to Danny, how long will it be before Olive stabs Ben in the back again? Will there ever be a satisfying resolution for the Olive, Danny, and Ben quagmire? Having “two dads” is one dad too many.

  2. Olive says to Danny

“She’s not gonna ask. I can tell she misses you, but it’s like she’s punishing herself.”

WTH Olive!!! You can tell she misses him? Who do you really want your mom to be with Olive, Danny or Ben? Punishing herself for what? Danny not still living in the house with her while sharing the benefits of the master bedroom?

Then Olive played the HELP ME card …

“Well, it’s like they died all over again. She’s barely smiling. She’s not eating. Seeing her like that messed me up more than the plane, and I can’t do it again.”

You can’t do what again, Olive? Lose your father because your mom foolishly and impulsively kicked him out of the house?

And how can it be like “they died” all over again, when “they are alive in the here and now?” Cal’s home. Ben’s not. So, why does Olive think Grace is “barely smiling?” That she wants Danny to over and talk her out of returning to the Grief and Loss support group?

If Olive was honestly concerned about her mom, she should have talked to her instead of inviting Danny over for dinner.

For some reason, whether it’s subconscious or not, she hates her father Ben. Either that or she’s madly in love with Danny … for all the wrong and improper reasons.

As I see it, Olive’s an immature, naive child and Danny’s an opportunistic scumbag.
