Scene shifts to the Stone house. As Grace takes the Mythology text book off of sleeping Olive’s chest, she hears metal rattling. It’s Ben on his knees trying to wash off the red “X” from the front door.
BEN: Sorry. I should’ve knocked.
GRACE: No, it’s fine. Besides, I saw you on the new camera you installed. Thank you. You don’t have to do this.
BEN: I do, actually. ‘Cause it’s the only thing I can do. Can’t stop people from hating us for no reason. I can’t tell my son how or why this is happening to him. So the only thing I can do is to try to take this ugly mark off my family’s house. So, please, just let me do it.
GRACE: It’s our family. We’re supposed to be a team. This is your home. And I need you here. I need you here.
A tear moves down her left cheek.
BEN: I love you so much.
Show of Unity
Because [Ben’s] wife now knows about the callings, she has a better understanding of why he’s being so protective, and the scene of the two of them scrubbing the painted red X on their door was quite symbolic in its show of unity.
